The methodology we as P.B.S.T.A. members embrace,  is a TLC (Tender Loving Care) method with Moms and Babies in the pool for the duration of a lesson of 30 minutes.   We recommend no more than 4 ‘couples’ in the pool at one time.  Age appropriate exercises are carried out according to the emotional, physical and psychological development of the child.   Toddlers are tutored in a class of no more than 4 pupils at a time.  The method used, is that of ‘ROUTINE AND REPETITION’ and at NO time is ‘forced’ submersion included in the program.   We merely introduce the babies to the water by guiding them gently at their own buoyancy level.   Many Swimming Teachers forget that all swimming strokes occur on top of the water – NOT under the water.  Due to many years of experience and continued education, new found knowledge has been adopted for this gentle approach to teaching babies to ‘swim’.

PBSTA Professional Baby Swimming Association

Our absolute passion is teaching babies to ‘swim’ - but even more so, to make them ‘water aware’ and confident in the water.   There a numerous benefits and advantages to starting swimming with a baby shortly after birth, to name but a few:

  • Babies accept water more readily since having spent 9 months in the womb.
  • Fear of water is acquired when they are older.
  • They have a strong diving response and an inborn swimming reflex.
  • It is very advantageous for their physical and psychological development as they use their muscles more being less restricted by gravity.
  • Their cardiovascular fitness improves.
  • By having to move bilaterally, to maintain their equilibrium in the water, they learn to improve their coordination and balance.
  • Their psychological development improves with ‘quality’ time spent in the water with their parents, giving them focused attention, including touch and nurturing.
  • By being able to move in water on their own they gain an enormous amount of independence and self-confidence.

(The Baby Swim Book – Cinda L. Kochen, PhD & Janet McCabe, BA. 1986)

We, however, recommend a bath routine be followed initially, until they are 5 or 6 months old and thereafter, once they have had most of their vaccinations, and have developed a fairly strong immune system, they then participate in more ‘formal’ lessons at a reputable Swimming School with appropriately qualified teachers.

We offer the P.B.S.T.A. INFANT/TODDLER SWIMMING TEACHERS’ COURSE in Edenvale, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town.   The course covers all aspects of water orientation, water safety, and the basic principles of movement in water, incorporating breathing and survival techniques.   The way we ‘teach’ the babies is with gentle touch, feel and communication.   We have developed a program which is followed at each lesson and the exercises incorporated in this program, have specific progressions to help the pupil achieve suitable swimming skills, according to their developmental, physical and emotional abilities.

By following the program through the different stages the Instructor provides guidance to the pupil to ‘flow’ into the LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM with confidence and ease.

As a guide for the parent and the Instructor we follow an award system issuing the pupil with a ‘sticker’, as and when, the pupil reaches the different stages of accomplishment.  This is motivational for both parent and child and it keeps the Instructor ‘in line’ with progress and achievement.  The four stages are age appropriate and challenging. When the last sticker, the Dolphin, is reached the pupil is a confident and capable little swimmer with a good knowledge of coping in the water in most conditions.  They can perform several skills and movement in the water to help them in most situations when in and around water.

We hope this has given you some insight into what the P.B.S.T.A. incorporates and what the ESB INFANT/TODDLER SWIMMING TEACHERS’ COURSE entails.  We look forward in welcoming many more prospective Swimming Teachers on board in order that we may be able to curb the statistics of drowning in South Africa.   If we teach babies WATER AWARENESS in a loving and caring way, they in turn, will learn to, not only, love and respect the water, but also to realize their own abilities and safety in and around the water.

I have produced a DVD - “Enid Swimming Babes” – WATER AWARENESS which is designed to promote BABY SWIMMING and motivate parents to take their babies for swimming lessons, thereby bringing down the statistics of drowning in South Africa and anywhere in the World.
