Happy Acres
Happy Acres is a child centred field centre with over 70 years of experience in providing an environment for children to learn more about themselves, the environment and how to interact with peers in the freedom of the Magaliesburg countryside.  Camps are one of the few environments where children can leave their backgrounds, privileged or not, and enter a secure surrealistic world as equals with children from a wide range of backgrounds. It’s a place where youngsters can be themselves, while being encouraged to explore a range of fun-filled activities.

Happy Acres is situated 56km North West of Johannesburg, and 90 km West of Pretoria, between Maropeng and the Magaliesburg village.

Three very different properties.
The smallest property is the most developed which is where the campers eat and sleep and is secured with an electric fence and 24hr armed response.
There are 7 dormitories that each sleep about 20 campers, several smaller rooms for teachers or leaders, ablution facililies, a multi-purpose hall, outdoor or indoor tables to cater for up to 150 campers, open-air stage, swimming pool, sports fields, extensive river frontage and lots of animals to love and hold.
The Old Mill property that has an old water driven turbine mill has about a km river frontage, large lawns, a full sized soccer field and an educational greenhouse.
The third property is the largest with large tracts of grassland and one of the last remaining stretches of indigenous, unspoilt river frontages in the Magaliesburg.

The properties are under new management and tremendous progress is being made to restore the properties and facilities back to what they were several years ago.

Holiday Camps Overview
Happy Acres is probably the country’s most loved children’s holiday camp with up to 35 000 children passing through the camp a year since 1945.
The holiday camps are a hybrid of American camps, Scouts and good old South African outdoor fun with structures and programs that have developed over the last 75 years into a highly organised system that encourages supportive interactions between children from a wide range of backgrounds.
An exciting new programme is designed for each camp to provide fun-filled schedules for different age groups to ensure that campers of all ages are well cared for, stimulated and entertained. Some activities involve the entire camp and other sessions are group specific, catering for various age groups and ability levels. The range of activities may include activities such as group games, outdoors adventures, sports, arts and crafts, walking/hiking, swimming or cook-outs. The organised activities are interspersed with opportunities to build friendships (which often last long after the camp ends), singing camp songs, swimming, rest time and many more activities.
Groups of roughly 10 boys and 10 girls of the same age are looked after by carefully selected and trained counsellors who ensure the campers are busy having fun from the moment they wake up until they go to sleep. The counsellors are also responsible for ensuring their campers feel that they belong, get involved in activities, are clean, fed, have sun-block on and kept warm throughout the camp.
The children sleep in dormitories with their counsellor and fellow campers, with the boys and girls dormitories located on opposite sides of the property.

In the word of a young camper, “other camps may have better things, but Happy Acres does things better than any other camp”.

Becoming a counsellor
Based on feedback from former counsellors, many of whom have excelled in their professional careers and personal lives, the privilege of being able to counsel offers youngsters one of the best opportunities available to gain leadership experience and skills while still at school.

You will need to attend as many camps as you are able to as either a camper or assistant counsellor, and attend a counsellors training course before you will be able to start building experience as a counsellor. Click here to register as a potential counsellor.  (This just needs a short registration: Name, DOB, School, Grade, email address.)
